The moments between the moments
Some weddings are remembered for spectacular details. Others are remembered because of how they felt. Emily and Dan’s ceremony at Crowcombe Court was one of those.
A calm beginning
Before the ceremony had even begun, there was a calmness that settled over the whole day. Yes, there was the usual flurry of steaming dresses (while their wearers were in them, stood on chairs, so hems were given adequate attention), final checks and people making sure everyone was where they needed to be. But beneath it all was a quiet confidence. Nobody was trying to create a perfect day. They were simply ready to enjoy it.
One of my favourite parts of any wedding day is spending a little time with each person before the ceremony begins. When I visited Emily while she was getting ready, the room was full of warmth. Family and friends chatted, laughed and helped one another, but nobody felt hurried. It was busy without being frantic.
The people who hold us up
Outside, Dan was having a very different experience.
He was understandably nervous. As guests arrived, he became quieter, taking little moments to himself while his best man, Ben, and the rest of the boys naturally gathered around him. Watching Ben gently keep an eye on his friend, quietly placing a reassuring hand on the small of his back now and again, was one of those tiny moments that probably passed unnoticed by most people.
For me, it perfectly summed up what friendship looks like.
Perfectly imperfect moments
Then came the procession.
As the saying goes, never work with children or animals! The youngest members of the wedding party decided that scattering petals wasn’t quite as exciting as keeping hold of them. Eventually, they made their way down the aisle, carried by willing adults who took over petal duty instead. Then, just as everyone thought the moment had passed, one page boy decided that actually, now was the perfect time to scatter the petals after all.
It brought smiles all around and reminded everyone that weddings don’t need to be flawless. In fact, this was better. It was human, perfectly imperfect, and we all relished it.
Love in the smallest gestures
Just before Emily made her entrance, Dan caught a glimpse of her. His eyes welled up and I swear he appeared to stop breathing. Without a word, I quietly handed him a tissue. It’s one of those small celebrant moments I treasure. The privilege of being side by side with people at these times is priceless.
Although he was standing behind him, Ben knew Dan was having all the feels. Leaning in, he quietly urged his friend to take a snapshot of the moment. “This is it, mate.” It was such a simple gesture, but one that spoke volumes. That fierce friendship, shared joy and quiet camaraderie is something I’ll carry with me, just as much as the moments Emily and Dan gifted me.
A ceremony that felt like them
Emily’s friends were as dutiful and focused as Dan’s were for him. Their attention never waned from making sure her dress fell just right and her veil draped as it should. Watching their friends so naturally care for them made something else clear. Emily and Dan have built these friendships over years of showing up for the people they love. The care surrounding them on their wedding day wasn’t accidental; it was a reflection of the thoughtful, attentive people they are.
Every piece of music had been chosen with someone in mind. Family gave readings, helped with the ring warming and played their own part in the ceremony. Emily and Dan didn’t simply invite people to witness their wedding; they made space for them within it. I thought that said everything about the kind of couple they are.
There was laughter in all the right places, quiet moments where you could have heard a pin drop, and countless smiles exchanged between family and friends as they recognised little pieces of the couple they love.
The ceremony carried the same qualities that define Emily and Dan themselves. Thoughtful. Tender. Relaxed.
As I looked around, I saw guests nodding in recognition, laughing at familiar stories and wiping away a few discreet tears. It’s the moment when it stops being words I’ve written and becomes everyone’s shared experience.
It was one of the hottest days of the year, right in the middle of a British heatwave. Throughout the ceremony, Dan kept quietly checking in on Emily. They never lost their connection, holding hands and sharing little whispers that only they could hear. Their care for one another was there in all those little moments.
The quiet privilege of stepping back
After the ceremony, there were hugs, a few selfies and heartfelt thank-yous before I quietly slipped away. That’s always my cue.
My role is to create the space for a couple’s story to be seen and celebrated. Once that’s happened, the day belongs entirely to them and the people they love.
A wish for the road ahead
Thank you, Emily and Dan, for trusting me with your story. Thank you for the moments that, even now, after a month or so of reflection, still give me goosebumps.
I wish you a lifetime of wonderfully ordinary days, filled with the same calm, kindness and quiet joy that surrounded you both at Crowcombe Court.
