Frequently asked questions
Welcome to my quick guide on booking, planning and personalising meaningful ceremonies.
Whether you’re curious about availability, fees, bespoke vows, legal requirements or how I create a relaxed, memorable experience for weddings, vow renewals or farewells, you’ll find clear answers here. If you don’t see what you need, get in touch. I’m always happy to chat and tailor a ceremony that truly reflects your story.
What does a celebrant do?
A celebrant creates and leads personalised ceremonies that reflect the people at their heart.
My role is to listen, guide, and thoughtfully shape a ceremony that feels meaningful, authentic, and held with care – whether that’s a wedding ceremony, a farewell, or a memorial. I take care of the structure and delivery, so you can focus on being present in the moment.
Are your wedding ceremonies legally binding?
No, not yet, but ‘the times they are a-changing’! In the UK, celebrants can’t (yet) legally marry couples.
That said, I create fully personalised, meaningful ceremonies that can take place before, after, or alongside the legal part. Many couples choose to have a celebrant-led ceremony as the heart of their day — filled with warmth, personality, and significance — while the registrar ensures the legal formalities are covered. I guide you through this process clearly, so you can focus on making your ceremony truly yours.
Most couples do the paperwork at a registry office separately, then have the real celebration with me – the one that reflects your love story, your way…without any of the usual, stuffy or bubble-bursting restrictions.
We don’t know what we want yet — is that okay?
Absolutely. Most people don’t.
You don’t need a clear vision before we begin. My job is to help you explore what feels right for you, offer ideas and reassurance, and gently shape a ceremony together. We’ll figure it out one step at a time.
How involved can we be in the ceremony?
Some people enjoy collaborating closely; others prefer to be guided and supported. There’s no right or wrong — I meet you where you are and adapt to what feels most comfortable for you.
Can our ceremony be non-religious?
Yes. All of the ceremonies I create are non-religious, inclusive, and person-centred.
That said, if it feels right to weave in spiritual elements, prayers or faith-based readings, cultural traditions, or symbolic rituals that matter to you, we can absolutely explore ways to honour them in a way that feels authentic and respectful.
We’re nervous about being the centre of attention — can you help?
How far in advance should we book you?
For weddings, as early as you can is always helpful, especially for popular dates — but it’s always worth getting in touch even if your date is approaching – you never know, I might be available.
For farewells, I understand that timings are often short and circumstances can be tender. I do my best to be flexible and responsive when support is needed.
If I am not free on the day, I will happily still support you to explore what you need (at no cost) and, as we Celebrants are a collaborative and supportive bunch of humans, I will likely know someone who might be available on your day.
Do you offer living eulogies or ceremonies planned by the person themselves?
Yes, I do.
Some people choose to plan their own ceremony or to write a eulogy while they are still alive. This might be because of illness, age, or simply a desire to reflect on life, express love, or have their voice heard in a meaningful way.
These ceremonies can be deeply powerful. They offer space for gratitude, honesty, humour, reconciliation, and connection — often bringing great comfort not only to the person at the centre, but to those who love them.
I approach living eulogies with sensitivity, respect, and care, working closely with you to shape something that feels right for where you are. There is no expectation to be sombre or solemn — these ceremonies can be reflective, gentle, joyful, or quietly profound.
As always, we move at a pace that feels comfortable, and everything is guided by what matters most to you.
How do you approach farewell ceremonies?
With care, compassion, and deep respect.
I take time to listen to stories and memories, and I create a ceremony that honours the person who has died while holding space for grief, love, and remembrance. There is no expectation to “be strong” or to do things a certain way — only to do what feels right for you.
Every farewell is unique, and my approach depends on where you are in the process. Some families may have had a direct cremation or burial and want a celebration of life or memorial later — perhaps with a ritual like a scattering of ashes, weeks or even months after their loved one has passed. Others may prefer a more traditional ceremony, sending off their loved one for cremation or burial within weeks of their passing.
In every case, I create a ceremony that honours the life lived, supports those who are grieving, and reflects what feels meaningful and right for you. My role is to guide the process gently, hold the space with compassion, and help everyone present feel supported and included.
Can family or friends be involved?
Family and friends can be involved in a ceremony in whatever way feels right for you. This might include readings, shared memories, music, rituals, or quiet moments of reflection — all of which can be gently woven into the ceremony.
They can also support you by contributing thoughts or memories that help shape the ceremony script. I’ll guide this process with care, making sure everyone feels comfortable, included, and supported.
Where can we marry?
That’s easy – anywhere! You have absolute freedom with an independent Celebrant; the choice is entirely yours. It could be in a forest glade, on a beach or beautiful riverbank, in a park, a coffee or tea shop, at a festival or gig, your favourite restaurant or pub – anywhere!!
Where can we celebrate the life of a loved one?
Anywhere that feels right to honour the person we are saying farewell to and brings you comfort and space to remember them.
There might be some regulations that need to be considered, worked around, or alternatives sought, but please don’t let that deter you. Get in touch with me, let’s talk through your ideas, and I am sure that we will find a way of honouring your loved one in an authentic style and give you that space to take moments and make gestures of remembrance.

How it works
The next step is simply to get in touch.
My number is 07712 407860, or email me at mel@mellythecelebrant.com or click over to the Contact page and fill in the short form.
We’ll have an initial conversation — no pressure, no obligation — to see if I’m the right fit for you and to talk through what you’re looking for. From there, we’ll take things at a pace that feels comfortable.
Once you’re booked, I’ll send you a relaxed questionnaire to get to know you — your story, your people, and what really matters to you.
If you’re local we can meet up, or I’m very happy to visit you, so I can soak up your tone and the little details that make your ceremony feel truly yours.
I’ll then write your ceremony and send it over for you to read through. You can ask for as many changes as you like — I’m not precious about the script, this ceremony belongs to you.
We move at a pace that feels comfortable, and I make the process as easy as possible. Many couples or families tell me they find it enjoyable… sometimes surprisingly affirming or comforting.
