When your wedding isn’t beige
There are some couples who spend months trying to make their wedding look different. Then there are couples like Louise and Pete, who simply couldn’t have had it any other way.
From our very first conversation, they knew they didn’t want what they affectionately described as “a white wedding with beige words.” They wanted something that reflected them. A ceremony full of humour, honesty and personality. Something that could happily sit alongside a love of gothic aesthetics, dark jokes and a dog called Chaos without ever losing sight of what really mattered.
It wasn’t about standing out. It was about recognising themselves in every word.
A very warm welcome and a tropical bird signal!
Their wedding took place on one of those gloriously hot June afternoons where the gardens at Burrow Farm looked as though they had been painted especially for the occasion. While everyone searched for patches of shade, the atmosphere somehow felt even warmer than the weather.
Pete arrived with Bernard and the rest of his crew in exactly the way anyone who knows them would expect: plenty of banter, plenty of good-natured jibing and enough laughter to settle any pre-ceremony nerves before they had chance to take hold.
Meanwhile, Louise looked absolutely incredible. Around her was the sort of friendship that can’t be manufactured for a wedding day. Jodi, Natalie and Maisie weren’t simply bridesmaids. They were exactly what they’d always been: loyal, protective and quietly making sure everything happened exactly as it should.
Even Chaos embraced the day in his own way, sensibly claiming a shady spot where Bernard made sure he was comfortable while keeping a watchful eye over proceedings.
There was just one slight departure from typical ceremony logistics. Normally, when the entrance is ready, I receive a discreet nod or wave from the back. Louise’s bridal party had other ideas. Instead, they announced themselves with what can only be described as an impressively accurate tropical bird call. Apparently, this was inspired by a film. Whether it was communication or a mating ritual remains unclear, but it certainly got my attention. It was gloriously ridiculous.
Which, if you knew Louise and Pete by then, made perfect sense. It was a wedding that felt wonderfully… them.
Friendship first
Writing Louise and Pete’s ceremony was one of those joyful reminders of why I love being a celebrant. Their story wasn’t built on dramatic declarations or sweeping romantic clichés. It was built on friendship. On shared humour. On learning each other’s wonderfully peculiar ways. On knowing when to challenge each other and when simply to say, “I’ve got you.”
Those are the stories I love telling. Because they’re real.
Words that fit
A few days after the wedding, Louise sent me a review that I’ll treasure for a long time.
“There was an instant feeling of connection to what we wanted to express at our ceremony… We are a more alternative couple and did not want a white wedding with beige words.”
I don’t think I could ask for a better description of what I hope every ceremony feels like. Not because every couple is alternative. Not because every ceremony is full of jokes. But because every couple deserves words that fit them.
Whether your style is classic, colourful, quiet, eccentric, emotional or somewhere in between, your ceremony shouldn’t feel borrowed from somebody else’s wedding.
It should feel unmistakably yours.
