The journey to Bickley Mill Inn feels like part of the experience. Leaving the A38 behind, the road begins to wind its way down through the Devon countryside. Wide, open views gradually give way to wooded valleys, where streams run alongside quiet country lanes and the pace of life seems to soften with every mile.
By the time you arrive, it already feels as though you’ve left something behind.
When I celebrated a wedding there in February, the gardens were still waiting for spring to arrive. The trees were bare, the flowers not yet awake, and yet the venue felt wonderfully alive. There was a warmth that had nothing to do with the season.
Step through the door and you’re greeted by everything you’d hope for from a traditional Devon country inn. Stone walls. Exposed beams. Open fires. The gentle scent of a log burner that’s been quietly glowing all afternoon.
There are little corners everywhere. Snugs where guests gather before the ceremony. Cosy spaces that seem designed for conversations that don’t need to be hurried. It’s the sort of building that immediately encourages you to take your coat off, settle in and stay a while.
Then, almost unexpectedly, the ceremony room tells a different story. It’s bright, fresh and beautifully simple. A calm, light-filled space that allows each couple’s flowers, colours and personality to become the focus rather than competing with them. It feels like a blank canvas, but never a blank room.
Outside, the woodland and gently flowing stream never seem very far away. Even indoors, there’s a quiet sense that nature is wrapping itself around the building. It creates the feeling of being tucked away from the rest of the world for a few precious hours.
As a celebrant, I’m always watching how a venue supports the people within it. The team at Bickley Mill do this with quiet confidence. Nothing feels rushed, yet everything seems to happen exactly when it should. The ceremony flows naturally into the drinks reception without guests ever needing to wonder where they’re meant to be. The staff seem to notice the details without drawing attention to themselves, allowing the couple and their families to simply enjoy the day without interruption. It’s the sort of professionalism that almost disappears into the background.
And perhaps that’s the point. The best hospitality often goes unnoticed because it allows everyone else to remain fully present.
Standing at the front, what I’ll remember most isn’t one particular room or feature. It’s the feeling. The feeling of being gently wrapped in the Devon countryside. The feeling of warmth after stepping in from the February air. The feeling that, for a little while, the outside world had quietly disappeared.
