What it feels like to get married at Burrow Farm Gardens

Standing at the front: thoughts from where the ceremony begins.

There are some places that feel as though they’ve always belonged exactly where they are. Burrow Farm Gardens is one of them.

Tucked away in the East Devon countryside, it’s the sort of place you don’t stumble across by accident. The roads become quieter, the hedgerows a little taller, and the pace of the journey begins to slow almost without you noticing. By the time you arrive, it already feels as though you’ve stepped away from the noise of everyday life.

The gardens themselves tell a story long before a ceremony begins.

Although Burrow Farm was once a working farm, generations of one family have patiently transformed it into something quite different. Not by imposing themselves on the landscape, but by listening to it. Ancient stonework has been celebrated rather than hidden. A natural spring has become a pond where dragonflies gather in the warmer months. Winding paths reveal quiet corners, unexpected sculptures and carefully framed views across the rolling Devon countryside.

Nothing feels hurried. Nothing feels accidental. Every part of the garden carries the quiet confidence of somewhere that has been loved for a very long time.

When I celebrated a wedding here, guests were still wandering through the gardens just minutes before the ceremony began. There was no sense of waiting around. Instead, people explored. They paused to admire a flower bed, discovered hidden details tucked into old walls, and simply enjoyed being there.

It struck me that the gardens were already doing what every good ceremony hopes to do. They encouraged people to slow down.

The ceremony itself takes place beside the pond, surrounded by mature trees and carefully tended planting. Beyond them, the land opens into one of those breathtaking Devon views that seems to stretch on forever. It never feels exposed, though. The gardens somehow manage to hold you gently before inviting your gaze out towards the wider landscape.

Standing at the front, it felt less like nature was providing a backdrop and more like it had become another guest. Not demanding attention. Simply present.

One of the lovely things about Burrow Farm Gardens is that couples are trusted to make the day their own. Rather than offering a tightly managed wedding package, the gardens offer something much rarer: space. Space to choose your own suppliers. Space to imagine your own celebration. Space to create a wedding that feels unmistakably yours, while borrowing somewhere that already has its own rich history.

Perhaps that’s what stayed with me most. For one day, this place becomes part of your story. And in return, your story becomes part of its own.

As I wandered through the gardens afterwards, I found myself thinking less about weddings and more about the generations who have quietly cared for this place. Every tree, every path and every carefully chosen plant exists because somebody believed it was worth tending, season after season.

Without ever saying it aloud, the gardens seem to offer a quiet reminder. The most beautiful things are rarely built all at once. They grow because somebody keeps coming back to care for them.

And standing at the front, surrounded by a place that has been nurtured with such patience and love, it felt like a rather beautiful place to begin a marriage.

Standing at the front

Thoughts from where the ceremony begins.

Every venue has its own personality. These are simply the things I noticed while standing at the front of a ceremony at Burrow Farm Gardens. If you’re considering this beautiful place for your own wedding, I’d really encourage you to visit. Wander the paths. Pause by the pond. Take in the views. You may notice entirely different things to me—and that’s rather the point.
